Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

When a soft tissue injury occurs, the body’s first reaction is to send platelet cells to the area, to begin the healing process. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is concentrated blood plasma containing approximately three to five times the number of platelets found in normally circulating blood. These platelets are packed with growth and healing factors, and they attract stem cells to the site of the injury. Stem cells are critically important to accelerate the healing process.

By injecting this super-rich plasma into the site of the injury, the healing process can be boosted and pain can be reduced or eliminated.

The PRP Procedure

The Platelet Rich Plasma is created from a small sample of the patient’s own blood. An amount of blood about the same volume as a typical laboratory sample is withdrawn from the patient. This blood is then placed into a centrifuge, spinning it at a high rate, such that the platelets are separated from the other blood components. The platelet-rich plasma is then injected back into the patient at the site of the injury, jump-starting the healing process and providing significantly greater amounts of the healing factors that the body needs. This is a simple in-office procedure, taking about fifteen minutes.

The Platelet Rich Plasma Facelift

The PRP Facelift is where science and beauty come together. This non-surgical procedure combines the power of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers. This is a three step procedure, offering a way to not only restore shape and improve tone and texture, but actually rejuvenate new and younger tissue.

The first step of the PRP Facelift is to use HA Fillers to sculpt a younger appearing face, while keeping the shape natural. Once the desired look is created, the physician then draws about two teaspoons of the patient’s blood from which the PRP is extracted using a centrifuge. Once activated, these platelets will release several growth factors that promote healing and rejuvenation. Step three involves putting the newly extracted PRP back into the patient’s face using a very small needle after the area has been numbed. Once back in the patient’s face, these growth factors activate multipotent stem cells in the skin which in turn develop into new collagen, new blood vessels and new fatty tissue, all resulting in younger appearing skin. Results typically continue to improve for two to three months after the procedure and last for one to two years.

Other PRP Treatments

PRP for Urinary Incontinence

Both life-restricting and embarrassing, urinary incontinence is a common problem as women age and can be caused by a number of issues. Infections or nerve damage from diabetes can cause this problem, as can taking diuretics (“water pills”). Sometimes pregnancies can cause damage to the pelvic muscles, which later in life results in incontinence.

Another contributing factor is the precipitous drop of estrogen as women age.
In addition to regulating a woman’s monthly cycles, estrogen also helps keep the bladder and the urethra (the drainage tube for urine) healthy and strong. Lack of estrogen may cause the pelvic muscles to weaken, allowing urine to leak out when coughing, sneezing or laughing. The sudden urge to urinate is another symptom of urinary incontinence and is related to loss of bladder control that can be tied to lack of estrogen.

Once other causes are ruled out, bioidentical hormone replacement may be a viable solution to replacing lost estrogen. Bioidentical hormones are exact structural replicas of the body’s natural hormones. As such, they are “read” and reacted to by the body in the same manner as naturally-occurring hormones. In the case of synthetic hormones, their chemical structure is slightly altered.

PRP for Pain

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections may also be effective in addressing pain and damage of the joints, ligaments, and tendons.
PRP offers faster results than many other forms of pain therapy as well as improved outcomes and fewer side effects. The use of PRP for addressing pain and injury in joint, ligaments, and tendons is actually not a novel concept. The practice actually dates back decades and has been frequently used throughout Europe. In fact, many famous athletes, such as Kobe Bryant, Tiger Woods, and Alex Rodriguez have traveled overseas for this therapy.

Conditions that can be treated with PRP Therapy include injuries and pain in the:

  • Knee*

  • Shoulder*

  • Elbow*

  • Spine*

PRP for Sexual Wellness in Women

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is a recent addition to the approaches available to help restore and rejuvenate the vaginal area, and improve sexual function.

Platelet Rich Plasma is concentrated blood plasma containing approximately three to five times the number of platelets found in normally circulating blood. These platelets are packed with growth and healing factors, and can help correct some of the changes in the vagina due to age, drug side-effects or hormone imbalances.

The vaginal area is then thoroughly numbed, and using a very fine needle, the super-rich plasma is injected back into the area. The PRP then releases several growth factors which go to work to stimulate growth and repair the stem cells and tissue in this area. Most women do not experience discomfort and the procedure requires no down time. Results can typically be seen in one to three months after the injection, with results lasting up to one year, depending on the individual. This is a simple in-office procedure.

Sexual enhancement therapy has been reported to increase sexual desire, arousal from clitoral stimulation, natural lubrication and the ability to have a vaginal orgasm. Women have also reported stronger and/or more frequent orgasms, as well as a tighter introitus (vaginal opening) and smoother vulva (vaginal lips). Some women have also reported a decrease in urinary incontinence as well as decreased pain for those experiencing dyspareunia (painful intercourse).

PRP for Sexual Wellness in Men

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy is a recent addition to the approaches available to enhance sexual function in men who have lost performance ability due to prostate enlargement or prostate cancer, or the after-effects of surgery or pharmaceutical drugs.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is concentrated blood plasma containing approximately three to five times the number of platelets found in normally circulating blood. These platelets are packed with growth and healing factors, and can help heal some of the damage done by disease, surgery or drugs

Following this, a topical anesthetic is applied and using a very fine needle, the Platelet Rich Plasma is injected back into the patient in a virtually painless procedure. The entire process takes about fifteen minutes
and is performed in the doctor’s office.

Results may be experienced immediately, and may last up to one year, depending on the individual. Sexual enhancement treatment had been reported to increase erection firmness, penile girth and length-up to one inch or more. Increased blood flow and circulation, stamina, pleasure and sensation through enhanced nerve sensitivity have also been reported.
